The “Like” Counter

As a team, we are always helping each other to be just a little better. Now that the Major 3 students are attending college interviews, we have all been  paying more attention to the way we present ourselves.

During an interview a few weeks ago, a student in our class, Adam, realized he was unnecessarily saying “like” as he was speaking. He felt that just saying the word makes one seem less intellectual and brings down credibility, so he sought a way to solve it. In class the next day, he told everyone about this realization and the class came up with the idea of The “Like” Counter, a way to help prevent one from using that unnecessary word.

Everyone wrote down their name on a list that we hung on a wall.  Now, each time they catch themselves or someone else catches them using “like” improperly, they put a tally next to their name. Each tally mark represents 5 cents that the student (or teacher) needs to contribute to the class fund.  At the end of the term, we will use the money collected to buy food for the class.

In our class, we spend a lot of time on our presentation skills, and our speech is definitely an integral factor.  The “Like” Counter gives us a fun way to be constantly vigilant of what we say.
