The Pedestrian Alert System

The Lemelson-MIT Program celebrates outstanding inventors and inspires young people to pursue creative lives and careers through invention. Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams are teams of high school students, teachers, and mentors that receive grants to invent technological solutions to real-world problems. The InvenTeam initiative aims to inspire a new generation of inventors and encourage an inventive culture in schools and communities.

The Newton North High School InvenTeam will invent a pedestrian alert system (P.A.S) to be used in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The system, which will cost approximately $3,700, will help pedestrians in developing countries safely cross dangerous roads, provide a protected area for the pedestrians, and warn drivers of crossing pedestrians. The invention will incorporate a dual-sensor method that uses a processing platform to calculate the arrival time of an oncoming vehicle. To minimize environmental impact, this invention will be partially built out of used automotive parts. It will be powered entirely by solar energy. To implement the invention in a nonintrusive way, it will be designed with the aesthetics of Ethiopian art and architecture in mind.

This blog will be used to communicate our team’s journey through the invention process. Please stay posted for more updates to come.
